Services

Below is a brief summary of the services that I offer. Often the terms ‘copyediting’ and ‘proofreading’ are used interchangeably, so it is important to clarify what exactly is expected before I start working on a project.

My fees are based on the CIEP’s suggested rates; however, they will vary depending on the client and project. For more detailed estimates, please contact me directly.

I am happy to provide brief sample edits (no longer than a page) free of charge to determine whether I would be a good fit for your project.

Copyediting

Copyediting is working on a draft text (a.k.a. the ‘copy’) intended for publication. In the standard publishing process, the text would have already undergone substantive or development editing. Therefore the purpose of copyediting is not rewriting the text, but identifying and correcting errors related to spelling, punctuation, grammar; making changes for flow, tone, syntax, and intended readership; applying a consistent style and format; and ensuring that tables, figures, and illustrations are correctly numbered and positioned. Occasionally, copyeditors may flag potential legal issues or query obvious factual inaccuracies.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final quality check in the editing process, done on a version of the text (a.k.a. the ‘proof’) that’s in layout and close to publication. As well as doing the last checks for spelling, grammar, and punctuation, proofreading involves ensuring that all the page elements are correctly placed and that formatting is consistent.

Substantive Editing

Substantive editing (also known as content or development editing) is an all encompassing term for work which is more involved than copyediting or proofreading. This can be improving or refining the quality of written English, making or suggesting changes to the language, organisation and style, or observing potential flaws in the argument or story. I do not offer substantive editing for any projects which are university assignments or any other work that’s being assessed.
